Research: Lord of the flies
Case study : Lord of the flies
The book focuses on a group of British boys stranded on an uninhabited island and their disastrous attempt to govern themselves.
Objective: Building a Character/Theme
I will be analysing the themes and characters that have similarity towards our storyline.
Characters
Ralph - The novel’s protagonist, the twelve-year-old English boy who is elected leader of the group of boys marooned on the island. Ralph attempts to coordinate the boys’ efforts to build a miniature civilization on the island until they can be rescued. Ralph represents human beings’ civilizing instinct, as opposed to the savage instinct that Jack embodies.
Idea: Ralph embodies the sister who tries to bring back her relationship with her brother and get him back to his senses.
the message of their novels is that societies can never be truly perfect, but can get better if individuals work together in democratic processes. Ralph, in Lord of the Flies, represents this potential, in his insistence on free speech, voting, and collaborative labor to provide shelter, gather food, and tend the fire
Jack - The novel’s antagonist, one of the older boys stranded on the island. Jack becomes the leader of the hunters but longs for total power and becomes increasingly wild, barbaric, and cruel as the novel progresses. Jack, adept at manipulating the other boys, represents the instinct of savagery within human beings, as opposed to the civilizing instinct Ralph represents.
Idea: The brother is represented as jack as he becomes ‘savage’ due to the loss of technology. He cant handle the fact that everything is gone and still doesn’t give up to find remaining objects of resources and tec on earth. This nature from him creates a distances from his sister. He forgets about her as he is so ‘obsessive' to find information.
Key themes
Loss of Innocence
As the boys on the island progress from well-behaved, orderly children longing for rescue to cruel, bloodthirsty hunters who have no desire to return to civilization, they naturally lose the sense of innocence that they possessed at the beginning of the novel.
Idea: the brother has gone mental/hungry for resources. As he can’t find any source of technology and keeps failing to find any source of material this effects his behaviour.
Civilization vs. Savagery
Ralph, the protagonist, who represents order and leadership; and Jack, the antagonist, who represents savagery and the desire for power. how different people feel the influences of the instincts of civilization and savagery to different degrees. The instinct of savagery is far more primal and fundamental to the human psyche than the instinct of civilization. Golding sees moral behaviour, in many cases, as something that civilization forces upon the individual rather than a natural expression of human individuality. When left to their own devices, Golding implies, people naturally revert to cruelty, savagery, and barbarism. This idea of innate human evil is central to Lord of the Flies
Idea: We can make this ‘world’ that is split into two groups just like Civilization vs. Savagery. The brother is ‘hungry’ for technology and therefore left his sister to find remaining life of information, tech ect.
