Shantels Post - The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

I loved the way how the creators developed the character of Chris, it truly felt like I could see the world from his eyes. I liked how we as an audience were able to build a superhero costume for Chris and take him on an adventure. From the dialogue to the animations of the imaginative world, Chris was very relatable and believable! I could almost see my 6-year-old self in some scene as they captured the imaginative world really well and creatively! It is also interesting how the game turned out to be much darker as the beginning was very light hearted and fun. They introduced more mature themes like alcoholism, grief, and loss. This was shown through the dad really well as he turned to alcohol to numb his overwhelming grief of his wife. And looking back I just realised how he will get annoyed when Chris calls him, and the tone/behaviour of the dad is constantly changing on every scene – he gets more angry. This imaginative world that he has created is a shield for Chris to escape thes...

Research: Understanding of death 0-11

0-2 years At this young age babies and toddlers don’t have an understanding of death nor the language to say how they are feeling. However, they can definitely experience feelings of loss and separation and are likely to pick up on the anxiety or distress of close adults or others around them. No concept of death. Will notice the absence of a parent between 4-7 months. Anxious about separating from parent. Acts in ways they did when they were younger (regressive behaviour). Feeding and sleeping difficulties. Common reactions can include: looking for the person who has died being irritable crying more wanting to be held more; being clingy being less active – quiet, less responsive possible weight loss being jumpy, anxious being fretful, distressed 2-5 years At this age children find it hard to understand that death is permanent. They are also at a stage of magical thinking, for example, thinking someone will come alive again or thinking somehow they made ...

Research: Lord of the flies

Case study : Lord of the flies   The book focuses on a group of British boys stranded on an uninhabited island and their disastrous attempt to govern themselves. Objective: Building a Character/Theme   I will be analysing   the themes and characters that have similarity towards our storyline.   Characters Ralph  -  The novel’s protagonist, the twelve-year-old English boy who is elected leader of the group of boys marooned on the island. Ralph attempts to coordinate the boys’ efforts to build a miniature civilization on the island until they can be rescued. Ralph represents human beings’ civilizing instinct, as opposed to the savage instinct that Jack embodies. Idea: Ralph embodies the sister who tries to bring back her relationship with her brother and get him back to his senses.   the message of their novels is that societies can never be truly perfect, but can get better if individuals work together in democratic pr...

Research: Inside out

Case study: inside out   Storyline:   Riley is guided by her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley's mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. Objective: Building a Character/ Theme   Personality island: The Islands of Personality are locations in   inside Riley's mind. They are the representation of the different aspects of Riley's personality that define her as a person. All the islands usually appear colourful and have neons which glow at night. The features of a given island animate when Riley is expressing what it represents. Each island is powered by a core memory, a memory of greater im...

Research: Memento

Case study: Memento   Objective: Building a Character Key quotes that can fit our storyline:   “The memories are malleable, they are interpretations, nothing more. They do not measure up to reality.   “Memory can change the shape of a room; it can change the colour of a car. And memories can be distorted. They’re just an interpretation, they’re not a record, and they’re irrelevant if you have the facts”   “I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can’t remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world’s still there. Do I believe the world’s still there? Is it still out there?… Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I’m no different” Storyline:   Leonard is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife's killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, un...

Research: Grave of the Fire Flies

Case study: Grave of the Fire Flies   Storyline: Grave of the Fireflies” (1988) is an animated film telling the story of two children from the port city of Kobe, made homeless by the bombs. Seita is a young teenager, and his sister Setsuko is about 5. Their father is serving in the Japanese navy, and their mother is a bomb victim; Seita kneels beside her body, covered with burns, in an emergency hospital. Their home, neighbors, schools are all gone. For a time an aunt takes them in, but she’s cruel about the need to feed them, and eventually Seita finds a hillside cave where they can live. He does what he can to find food, and to answer Setsuko’s questions about their parents. The first shot of the film shows Seita dead in a subway station, and so we can guess Setsuko’s fate; we are accompanied through flashbacks by the boy’s spirit. Objective: Death Isao Takahata shows us the humble opposite, that when times are tough what you need most is humility, patience and...
