Research: Memento
Case study: Memento
Objective: Building a Character
Key quotes that can fit our storyline:
“The memories are malleable, they are interpretations, nothing more. They do not measure up to reality.
“Memory can change the shape of a room; it can change the colour of a car. And memories can be distorted. They’re just an interpretation, they’re not a record, and they’re irrelevant if you have the facts”
“I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can’t remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world’s still there. Do I believe the world’s still there? Is it still out there?… Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I’m no different”
Storyline: Leonard is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife's killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he's going, or why.
Idea: A key part of the movie that I want to utilise in our storyline is the way he retains a semblance of memory on his body. He would scribble notes constantly, checking the tattoos that cover his body for the faintest sign of recognition of his life. Reflecting this idea back to the ‘brother’, in our narrative I would like to use various objects that will be attached on him as a way for him to remember things such as his sister. (as the objects are burnt the memory is not clear for the brother and therefore the sister may try to help him in a way to help him to remember)
