The story (The Adventure!) (Shantel)
Do you remember the first time you experienced grief? Perhaps it was your first pet hamster when you were a child, or your dog, or someone close. For 8 year old boy Jamie, it was an entirely different adventure.
Sophie’s Map is a short film about Jamie going on his last adventure with his older sister Sophie. Jamie takes on the world with an Indiana Jones attitude, courageous and imaginative. For him, everything is a huge expedition, and every problem is an adventure. Sophie’s quiet and artistic personality sets her apart from Jamie but despite their differences their sibling bond is unbreakable.
He creates a map of Sophie’s sketches, creating their exciting hunt for artifacts, just like Indiana Jones, picking up special items of history to put up in their own secret museum. Each little step is a special place between them, holding sentimental items and collecting them for the end of their museum collection. Sophie on the other hand, tries to teach him to go off on his own, ordering from a cashier, fighting his own monsters, and being vulnerable. Through this adventure, Jamie tries to comprehend his own feelings and understand what it means to let go of someone that’s gone forever.
Why tell this story (Why Go On This Adventure) (Shantel)
The aim of ‘Sophie’s Map’ is to bring the audience’s attention to the unique way in which people, in this case a child, deal with common grief when losing something or someone dear to them. Some people’s first experience with loss is with their pet hamster or dog, and for Jamie, the 8-year-old protagonist of our short film, his first experience is when he suddenly loses his older sister in a car accident. Even a year later, while his parents has moved on clearing her room, it’s hard for him to understand what it means when people say that “she’s gone.” Gone where? Where did she go?
But through his final journey and adventure he has with Sophie, he goes through confusing feelings, denial and slowly understands what this loss truly means. And he learns to accept it. By filming from Jamie’s perspectives the short film should also explore the multiplicity of emotions a child can go through when experiencing trauma as well as how they cope with them. Overall the film should give a sense of catharsis for both children and adult viewers in a nostalgically hopeful yet somber, or saudade way.
We want to tell this nostalgic story of grief from a different point of view. At its core it’s about a child struggling with the loss of his older sister but we want to bring the audience back to those simpler times and how we saw the world, with every problem being an adventure. It’s a story of an everyday tragedy that reminds us that we’ve all been kids, we’ve all played pretend, and we’ve all had adventures that we’ve conquered.

Most of our budget will be spend on the locations and cast, especially two main characters. We will also need to hire a professional illustrator to create Sophie’s drawings, a gaffer who can help and a composer for the soundtrack. The rest will cover set design, costumes and travel expenses.
