MA Audio

Sonic environment and architecture
  • It involved the consideration and design of space, what does the environment sound like?
  • Sounds can be both physically and emotionally deifining of the space.

Objective and subjective sound
Objective sound: fact based observable
Subjection: emotional

Diegetic and non-diegetic sound

Diegetic - sound thats visible on screen or implied by action or environment

Non-diegetic - neither visible or has been implied in action or environment so soundtracks music etc etc

Factor to consider
  • Location, environment, day or night, past present or future

Make sure when u do pickup, the sound matches the time you filmed it, its easy to miss that out when you’re doing pick ups.

The sonic palette
  • Raw sounds or starting point
  • Building blocks
  • sound effects
  • Wild tracks etc

Defining sound effects and ambience source
  • Production tracks (your sound recordings in sync with visual rushes)
  • Sound libraries
  • Wild track recordings (on locations or in the studio) room tone basically
  • Samplers and synthesisers

Think about foley editing and mixing, if you can see it and it moves, it makes a sound, think about it

MA Audio

  • How do we export it to MA audio from premiere pro and how do they come back to import together from picture grading and sound?
  • Do a BITC to the audio and grading team (timecoded)
  • What audio state should it be during pic lock before going to our post sound mixer?
  • Radio mics and boom on shoot, keep all tracks of recordings of a scene for the sound mixer to decide
  • Think about the max of character in one scene, how many wide shots? How many radio mics
  • Location recce with MA sound if we can, and have the money
  • Rehearsals in studios first?
  • First track/bus should be dialogues, synced tracks, colour coded, named tracks
  • Next set of tracks/bus - Synced effects, on set foley, on location sounds etc *mark script for sounds required*
  • Room tone, continuity!! Position of the boom where it was placed,
  • RX plugin, ambient match,
  • M2.4 booking through Aidan, or wired mics
